Most pop band musicians are not virtuoso players of their instruments but it doesn't matter. To belittle the Beatles because they couldn't sight read and play a score is arrogant and rather stupid.

Jones' frame of reference included jazz musicians of the highest calibre. As a trumpet player and arranger, he worked with Clifford Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, Ray Charles and many others. He certainly knew and heard Charlie Parker, probably jammed with him. That's a level of instrumental command in a different register from pop and rock bands. Comparisons between the two fields don't hold up, and it's unfair to hold one set of musicians to standards required of another. You wouldn't ask an operatic soprano to sing the blues, nor Koko Taylor to perform something from Madame Butterfly- yet both are equally valid expressions of musical artistry.

Define musicians? if you can tap your foot to a beat - and keep in time - then it would not be unreasonable to say that you possess some musical ability. Writers and players alike require creative musical abilities. Genius is a word which describes exceptional abilities by any other standard. I believe the music created by The Beatles and how it was played and performed as a whole could be considered to be genius.

Idiotic comment, I don’t care who he is. Sounds like something my Dad would have said back in the early 60’s. Sounds like a personal vendetta by Quincy Jones. Disappointed that you would say, “I get it!”. A musician is much more than their particular expertise on instruments. If Ringo was so bad, why didn’t they get rid of him like they did Pete Best? Although you mostly defend their artistry, giving Jones any grounds on that statement, is ludicrous. Beethoven was freaking deaf..was he a terrible musician? Joplin, and Joe Cocker had terrible voices, how do they stand? You need to chill out about the Beatles. George Harrison, “..Gently Weeps”, for your even partial support for this statement by..who was that guy?

I'd love to hear you talk about tuning systems. Even temperament is conceptually simple but it spoils all the harmonies: I suspect that is why Judy's voice looks "out of tune" when compared with an even-temper scale.

I have a friend, a multi-instrumentalist, who has noted that the Beatles are overrated as musicians, with George being the best skilled of the four. He has also agreed with Stephen Wilson in saying that Mr Wilson is not a technical guitarist. And I agree with him about the Beatles, as instrumentalists, yet with the caveat that the Beatles are brilliant at composition. That said, having watched & seen Mr Jones' comments about Ringo Starr, my perception of Mr Jones' reaction & attitude towards Ringo is one of dismissal or worse. But then I am judging his comments sans a wider context, so is that my fault? P.S.: This is not dismissing Mr. Jones' capacities outside of his comments about Mr Starr....

I'm late by years to this video but gotta say... Fil, I love you for doing this one. I just found your channel a month or two ago and stumbled upon this absolute GEM just today. Queen is my favorite band for 50 years, and of course loved them at LiveAid as well, but have never heard such an excellent breakdown of the details. I was at the Philly Live Aid show, volunteering backstage, so while I adored being part of the excitement, I missed so much of the live performances and did not get to see this as it happened. Your insight is wonderful on all your analysis videos, but this one is special to me. I love being clued into all these tiny details. I love watching this again (and again and again and yet again) 😂 but it's even better now. And watching you watch the video was just as joyful as seeing the performance itself. Love your knowledge, and your joy of music, and your smile. Thank you thank you thank you.

Quincy was a great producer. He was a jazz musician. You were overly nice to Quincy. He helped produce other people's music. Sorry but it reminds me of progressive rock - fancy and difficult to play - but not what most of us want to hear. Session players are great at what they do. But I think some of the most technical of musicians are boring to listen to at times.

Excellent explanation at around 3:30 with the guitar and it’s human element (fingers on the fretboard) compared to an open tuned note. Likewise…this is why local bands with good singers who solely use a mic, an amp, and maybe a little reverb are basically the frontlines of REAL human performances with the human element and inflection front and center with nothing else…without being tainted by commercialization and it’s need for “perfection.” SUPPORT LOCAL LIVE MUSIC!!!

They didn’t play on their records. Nor did they write the songs. With the exception of a few songs. Just ask the legendary Bernard Purdie. He played drums on 21 Beatles songs. Beatles fans have suspended their disbelief, in order to believe the Beatles narrative. They utilized session players on everything. Here’s one of hundreds of examples: Donovan played guitar on “Julia”. He also wrote “Yellow Submarine”. Not just the one line which “Paul” claims. Also, Rubber Soul has been proven to be mathematically impossible to have been recorded in the timeframe that the official narrative claims. Mike Williams on the Sage of Quay channel has thoroughly debunked the Beatles lie. But you, dear reader, have been duped, so you’ll likely automatically dismiss this information. Which is sad. Taking the blue pill is pathetic. Open your mind. The Apple is rotten. Ps: fil im a fan of yours, but all you’re doing here is repeating a bunch of lies. I thought better of you. Turns out, you’re as willfully blind as all Beatles fans. You should check into Mike Williams’ stellar research. I warn you though…once you see it, you can’t unsee it. It’s so obvious.

Your analysis reminds me of how he talked about singing from a palette, the same as he would as if painting. Just selecting this tone, with this mix, for this part of the canvas, spread it around a bit, pat it on here or there, whatever, as the moment (in singing) suited. And he has a rich repertoire of "voices", a wide palette, to pick from. There are other performances of this song that are more "properly" sung, such as from his Isolar days, that I've been stunned by, but no more or less skillful and artful as here, as your analysis makes clear for me

When you poke around enough with what makes a butterfly tick, what you're left with is not a butterfly. That said, I understand what you're trying to tell vocal artists. Most of them won't get away with the degree of freedom and instinct Bowie put on display. I don't want to romanticise Bowie; my feelings about his art are personal. I didn't care much for "Heroes" when I first heard it, maybe it scared me, but it's a monumental composition that led to iconic performances. I now get butterflies when I hear it.
